Marklund impressed with Austrian performance

Swedish rallycross driver Anton Marklund was unlucky to miss out on a place in the final at round eight of the FIA European Rallycross Championship, held at Greinbach, Austria (Sept 14 – 15).

The Victory Motorcycles sponsored Volkswagen Polo R Supercar driver was pleased with the performance of both himself and the car, on a circuit that he tested on last winter, early in his Supercar career.

“We came here one of the first times I drove the Polo, so it was great to come back to somewhere I know more than usual. It felt a lot easier and I had so much fun driving. It’s good that we have had the speed, for once from both me and the car at the same time,” said Marklund.

The young Swede lay in third position at the end of day one, a position he held at the Intermediate Classification after a series of strong heat times put him just behind two of the most experienced drivers in the championship, Liam Doran and Petter Solberg.

The semi-final didn’t go so well for Marklund, a spin on the first lap of the race was compounded by a gearbox issue that resulted in his VW Polo being stuck in fourth gear from lap three.

“My whole weekend was brilliant, apart from one lap. Unfortunately that one lap was the first lap of the semi-final and it meant I didn’t go any further.”

Marklund Motorsport will be back in action this coming weekend for the final round of the 2013 RallycrossRX championship at the Estering, Germany (Sept 21 – 22) where the team have already tested this year with DTM star Mattias Ekstrom.

“I haven’t reached a final yet this season so that is my plan in Germany. Obviously anything can happen but that would be a nice way to end the year” said Marklund.
